Kinesiology/ Head Cross Country Coach

The University of Texas of the Permian Basin is seeking a full-time Lecturer in Kinesiology /Head Cross Country Coach. UTPB supports a student population of 3,600, 11 intercollegiate sports and is a member of the NCAA Division II competing within the Heartland Conference.

The successful candidate will serve as administrator of the Forms of Movement Program for Kinesiology Majors and teach six credits per semester to include a combination of Activity/Forms of Movement and/or general Kinesiology service classes.

Athletic-related responsibilities include, but are not limited to, coaching men’s and Women’s Cross Country, monitoring academic progress, recruitment of qualified student-athletes, budget management and community fundraising in accordance with the statutes of the NCAA, State of Texas and The University of Texas, and other duties as assigned.

A Master’s degree in Kinesiology or a related field is required. Teaching experience in higher education is preferred. Collegiate coaching experience and recruiting experience, preferably at the NCAA Division II level, is preferred.

The coaching portion of the position is a 12 month appointment. The academic portion of the position is a 9-month appointment. Base salary will not exceed $40,000. Additional pay is possible with summer teaching. Excellent benefits provided. Specific job requirements render the position as security sensitive, and thereby subject to Section 51.215 of the Texas Education Code requiring a Criminal Background Check.

Head Coach Job Description

The major responsibility of the head coach is to carry out the day to day operation of the specific sports program. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Insure compliance with all rules and regulations of the NCAA and Heartland Conference
  • Provide participants appropriate training and academic time for continued program eligibility and personal growth 
  • Work closely with the Athletics Director to develop games schedules; prepare an annual budget; and plan major purchases 
  • Supervise graduate assistants and student assistants 
  • Make all team travel arrangements including meals, lodging, and transportation for athletes in accordance with available funding/budget constraints 
  • Oversee the selection, purchase, fitting, and maintenance of all team equipment according to state and university policies and regulations 
  • Monitor inventory levels of all uniforms and equipment
  • Arrange for officials for all games 
  • Monitor the eligibility status of student athletes
  • Establish and monitor a program of team conduct and discipline 
  • Work with the Athletics Director and the Head Athletic Trainer to insure that all games and practices are conducted under safe conditions and that any athletic injuries receive prompt medical attention 
  • Recruit prospective athletes through personal visits, telephone interviews, and mail solicitation in accordance with established NCAA requirements and standards
  • Coordinate/schedule site visits for prospective recruits, parents, and other interested parties 
  • Monitor academic performance levels of all participating student athletes to ensure compliance with established university and accrediting standards for class attendance and grade performance 
  • Counsel and assist students regarding study habits and class performance to promote and encourage continued program eligibility and attainment of degree status
  • Plan, develop, and implement a variety of fund raising events for financial/equipment contributions 
  • Coach students throughout all games, reviews strategies, strengths, and weaknesses of previous, current, and future performance to promote and encourage personal and/or team improvement 
  • Provide information and/or statistics to the University’s media as well as other local/regional media i.e.: radio, print, and television to promote awareness of UTPB’s programs, students, and environment 
  • Complete/maintain a variety of records and reports of achievements and activities
  • Perform other duties as requested by the Athletics Director

Kinesiology Lecturer

  • Report to the Chairperson of the Department of Kinesiology.
  • Follow all university, college, and department policies and procedures including training and reporting for accreditation purposes and other needs.
  • Teach a combination of one credit hour and three credit hour courses within the Kinesiology department for a total of 6 student credit hours each semester. 
  • Must be able to teach utilizing the instructional styles targeted for specific courses, or to learn to teach effectively utilizing such instructional styles.
  • Potential courses include Concepts of Fitness and Wellness, First Aid, Adventure Education, Swimming, Racquet Sports, Team Sports, Weight Training, and more.
  • Summer teaching may be available but is not guaranteed.

Coordinator of Forms of Movement Program

  • Report to the Chairperson of the Department of Kinesiology.
  • Duties include and are not limited to 
    • Training, supervising, and evaluating the teaching performance of graduate teaching assistants and adjunct instructors.
    • Controlling physical education equipment, regularly taking inventory of equipment, and working with administrative assistant to gain approval for ordering equipment.
    • Set annual institutional effectiveness goals for the program and work with departmental faculty to track their effectiveness.
