Dean - College of Arts and Sciences

The University of the Permian Basin invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean of its College of Arts and Sciences. UT Permian Basin is a component institution of The University of Texas System with an enrollment of approximately 3,600 students located in the Odessa-Midland metropolitan area, a community of approximately 250,000. The University serves West Texas with baccalaureate and masters programs through the College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Business, and the School of Education. UT Permian Basin is a recognized Hispanic-Serving Institution.

The UT Permian Basin College of Arts and Sciences has 2,400 students in 24 undergraduate and 10 graduate programs. The College has approximately 130 faculty; 93 are full-time. More information on UT Permian Basin and its College of Arts and Sciences may be found at http://cas.utpb.edu/.

The Dean is the Chief Academic and Administrative Officer of the College of Arts and Sciences and reports directly to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs.

The Dean:

  • Leads college efforts in growing enrollment, increasing funded research, and enhancing student success;
  • Ensures the academic integrity of all educational programs;
  • Values the unique characteristics of disciplines within the College;
  • Encourages excellence in teaching, research/creative works, externally funded activities, and service;
  • Oversee the fiscal well-being of the College; and
  • Facilitates alumni and donor relations.

Candidates must qualify for a tenured appointment as Professor, preferably in one of the current disciplines within the College. Candidates must also possess prior administrative and leadership experience as well as a record of significant achievement in teaching, research/work, and professional activity. Candidates must have experience in strategic planning, budget management, and academic program development. Successful external grant writing and experience in alumni and donor relations are highly desirable.

The College of Arts and Sciences is seeking a dynamic and visionary Dean to provide leadership in meeting the challenges the College and the University face in serving the needs of a diverse student population. These challenges include finding ways to enhance growth in: (1) Enrollments – one of the fastest growing institutions in Texas; (2) Research – significantly increasing its research and creative works productivity with emphasis on externally-funded activities; (3) Quality – through specialized program accreditations and building a reputation of quality for all programs; (4) Programs to meet the needs of Texas and the region; (5) Student Services - specific emphasis on programs to aid student academic success; and (6) Diversity.
